On your way to an interview?  Firstly, congratulations... your CV has done its job. It is important to remember that the interview is where you get a chance to present yourself as the perfect candidate.

Here are a few tips to ensure that you stand out amongst the other candidates:

Research the company
You will be asked specific questions about the company, so make sure you've done your homework on things such as their products, key people, and other information.  Also get up to speed with the latest developments in the industry so you can talk to the interviewers with confidence.

Practice your answers
Although each interview is different, there are some standard questions that will almost certainly come up. You should be well versed in answering questions about your strengths and weaknesses, and also be able to explain why you would be the best person for the job.

Look the part
“The apparel oft proclaims the man” wrote William Shakespeare in Hamlet; and nowhere else does this apply more than in a job interview. Make sure your shoes are polished, your clothes fit properly and that any accessories are subtle.  For almost all job interviews, “clothes” for a man means a suit, tie and shoes. For women, smart, appropriate dress is expected. Mini-skirts, bright make-up or anything considered garish is a definite no-no.

Stay calm
Good preparation is the key to staying in control. Plan your route, ensure you leave extra time for any unexpected delays, and get everything you need to take with you ready the night before. Remember to speak slowly and clearly, smile and remember that your interviewers are just normal people too.

Ask questions
To show interest in the company and the position, you should always have a few questions to ask the interviewer. These should allow you to glean more information about the job itself, and some should explore the aims and goals of the company.
